"You are really something Markham Savoy," Piper murmured without looking at him. His pulse surged. What he wouldn't give to see the look on her face right now.
"I try."
Something in her shifted as she turned to look at him. Markham saw it as clearly as if an emotional tectonic plate deep in Piper had sent ripples all through her. "In fact, I hate you marginally less than I did this morning." Her smile was the purest thing he'd ever seen. He wanted to freeze this moment so he could savor it again at his leisure. "Try not to change that?" She rose.
Markham smiled and closed his eyes again.
After a few moments, he said "I think instead I'll try to repeat it."
He opened his eyes to gauge her reaction, anticipation thrilling through him at the prospect of Piper's green eyes meeting his. But when he looked around Piper was already gone.
