BLOG TOUR - EXCERPT & GIVEAWAY: Summer Break Blues (The Clanless, #2) by J.A. Campbell

I'm so excited to be taking part in the tour for Julie Campbell's new book in The Clanless series, Summer Break Blues. I haven't had the chance yo read these books yet, but they sound right up my alley!! Please welcome Julie to the blog!!!

Tracey, thank you so much for having me here today and thank you dear readers for joining me in celebrating the book release of my second young adult urban fantasy, Summer Break Blues. This is the sequel to Senior Year Bites and picks up a few months after it left off with Meg’s graduation from high school. Here’s a sneak peek.

Excerpt:

I hit the gas pretty hard on the on ramp. I couldn’t see what kind of car the man following us drove, but the engine had a deep growl that made me think it might have more speed than mine.

The car proved my suspicions when it easily passed me on the empty stretch of road, but I breathed a sigh of relief when he kept going.

Ann and Steph fell asleep again. Alexander sat as close to the middle of the Jeep as he could, and he was uncomfortably close to me, especially as hungry as I was. I didn’t make him move though. We could be uncomfortable together. I’d almost forgotten about the encounter at the gas station when I saw yellow hazards flashing up ahead.

Alexander perked up and stared at the lights. I pulled out into the left lane and slowed down to pass.

“Should we help?” he asked.

“One, we’re in a car full of teenage girls, and it’s the middle of the night. Two, I think it’s the guy from the gas station. So no, we don’t stop.”

He made a face. “Creeptastic.”

“Yeah.” I watched in my rearview mirror. Not too long after we passed, the hazards turned off and the engine roared to life. “I think we might have a problem.” I whispered so I didn’t wake my friends.

He twisted around to look. “Perhaps you should go faster.”

I stepped on the accelerator but I couldn’t outrun the guy behind us. I prayed for a semi to pass, but the highway had been empty for quite a while.

“What’s wrong?” Steph mumbled as I passed eighty miles an hour.

“You guys have your seat belts on?”

“Yeah. Why?” She sounded more alert now.

“I think the guy from back at the gas station is following us.”

The car behind me accelerated and passed on the right. I didn’t have a hope in hell of outrunning him as easily as he passed me so I slowed down, hoping he’d simply leave. For a minute it looked like he was going to, then he slowed, swerved in front of me, and hit his brakes.

“Alexander, any Faerie awesomeness you can pull out and use to help us?” I said through gritted teeth as I swerved into the right lane. The car matched my maneuver. He’d probably been expecting it, but what else could I do? I dove back into the left lane and floored the accelerator, trying to get around.

“No, I’m pretty drained. Too long surrounded by metal.”

“Awesome.”

“Use your Vampire powers,” he muttered.

“Such as?” The squeal of metal and the Jeep’s sudden lurch to the left interrupted us, and I concentrated on keeping it on the road. The front end shuddered and the wheel jerked oddly in my hand. I cursed to myself and slowed.

“Guess we’re going to use my Vampire powers in person…then call for a tow.”

“Meg!” Ann yelled. I slammed on the brakes and the impact that would have hit where she sat struck the front end instead, sending us into a spin. Somehow I managed to keep us upright as we spun off the road. We stopped with a sickening metallic crunch, and I developed sympathy for the guy in the van I had crushed as my Jeep’s front end folded around a large tree.

Alexander groaned. “Okay, now I’m really glad we’re in your car.”

I glared at him while I tried to get my seatbelt off. “You guys okay?” It stuck and I yanked hard. The buckle broke.

“I think so,” Steph said.

“Yes,” Ann replied.

“I’m seriously going to kick this guy’s ass,” I growled, kicking the door of my poor Jeep open. Alexander scrambled out behind me. I took Steph and Ann at their word. I could smell blood, but not a lot, so I didn’t worry too much. I needed to deal with the asshole first.

Meg managed to survive her senior year of high school as a vampire, and now she’s looking forward to a relaxing summer with her friends before trying to tackle college. Unfortunately, some unfinished business from the previous year rears its ugly head and Meg is forced to deal with the Sidhe who are distinctly unhappy that she killed one of their kind last winter. Then Ann’s parents vanish while they are on their annual summer vacation in Maine and it’s up to Meg and the rest of the gang to come to the rescue. Though she is still trying to figure out who, and what she has become, Meg and her friends feel they are up to the challenge. That is until things really start to fall apart.
