REVIEW: Fight For Her (For Her #1) by Harper James

Chloe has spent her entire life trying to blend in, but that’s what happens when your father is a popular newscaster and you are the shy, studious girl in the front of the class. These days she is trying to stay invisible for an entirely different reason. Her father has become a popular newscaster who has the potential to ruin both of their lives. Her life is now a cycle of school, making sure her father makes it to work on time, trying to do everything in her power to make the best grades she can, and attaining a scholarship far, far away from her current misery. 

A chance run in, literally, with the two most popular boys at school has Chloe fighting two very different kinds of attraction. Where one burns hot and instantaneous, the other simmers to a slow boil that she can barely contain. Chloe must decide between these two former friends turned enemies as her life is thrust into the spotlight by gossip and betrayal. Chloe must find a way to deal with her new-found popularity and scrutiny as she struggles to make her choice.

My Thoughts:

"How the hell am I supposed to choose between the two greatest guys I have ever known, who, though they both have flaws, still make me feel incredible when we're together?"

One of the things that I'm not a huge fan of is love triangles. Every now and then one will come along that I find myself tolerating, but as a general rule, I'd rather not have to encounter them. The synopsis of Fight For Her makes it pretty clear that there is going to be a doozy of a love triangle. So to say that I was anxious going in would be a huge understatement. I wanted to love this book, but was completely one hundred percent convinced that I wouldn't. 

Chloe Delaney has spent her life trying to blend in and not draw attention to herself. She is shy and quite, and since the death of her mother, and her newsreader father getting lost in his grief with alcohol, Chloe has had to grow up pretty quickly. When the two most popular boys in school suddenly show an interest in her, she can't help but be attracted to them both. But a choice has to be made. Chloe must decide between the two and hope that in the process, they can all come out unscathed. 

"Nate makes me laugh, and I get to be someone I've never been before with him. I'm brave and sarcastic and fun. He listens to me."

Told from the point of view of all three of the main characters, this allowed us to get a great feel for where everyone's heads were at and understand completely why Chloe was so torn in her decisions. And completely torn she was. She was really genuine in her feelings, and that was one of the things that I liked most about her. She was especially strong when it come to her home life and dealing with everything with her Dad.

"Scott is so sweet."

"I feel safe with him. I feel as if I have something I've been missing since Mom died with him. I feel as if he would never hurt me. He'll always be a protector."

What made this love triangle different was that all parties involved knew what was going on. That's not to say that they were happy with they way things progressed, but Chloe was completely up front about her feelings. That allowed me to put aside my dislike and just go with the story. I truly loved both Scott and Nate. They were both loving, caring, protective and sweet. But I did have my favourite that I was rooting for. The one that I felt had the greater connection to Chloe and understood her better. And even though my guy didn't come out on top, I couldn't be terribly disappointed in the outcome.

Sometimes support characters can tend to blend into the background a bit and not have a huge impact on a story. But there was one in particular that really stood out for me and that was Scott's sister, Olivia. She was so supportive. Not just of Chloe either. She really had her head screwed on.

I was really impressed by the authors ease of writing. This was such a breeze to read. The story moved at a really nice pace. Her characters were likeable and I was invested in the outcome of the story. So, thanks to the way that Harper James handled the romances, what I thought I would dislike, turned out to be a really great read.

REVIEW: The Break-Up Artist by Philip Siegel

Some sixteen-year-olds babysit for extra cash. Some work at the mall. Becca Williamson breaks up couples.

My Thoughts:

Love.

People use that word to go around and do what they please. They don't have to worry about who gets hurt because it's all in the name of love. Love has no rules, no boundaries. It's gone all these years unchecked. That doesn't make it whimsical; that makes it a tyrant.

I had heard so many people say what a fun and cute read The Break Up Artist was that I knew that this was a book that I just had to read for myself.

I think that at some point in our lives we've either been that person that's been pushed aside a little when our best friend finds themselves in a relationship and swept up in the romance and all the feelings that come along with that, or we know someone who has. And haven't we all felt a little bit upset and put out by that? Maybe not to the point where we'd try to break them up, but definitely enough to feel hurt and left out. Or maybe we've even been the one to get wrapped up in our own new relationship.

"After the first dates and romantic gestures peter out, because they all will eventually, you have to be left with a person you still want to look at every day."

Becca is the Break Up Artist. She goes incognito and finds the flaws and exposes them in the relationships she's been hired to end. I have to say that it took me a little while to warm up to Becca. I had this little niggling in the back of my head that kept questioning, what right she had to meddle in peoples affairs? But as the story went on, I found myself pushing that thought aside and just trying to enjoy the story. And I did end up liking Becca, because when it's all said and done, I think her intentions were good, even if I thought she went about some things the wrong way.

Maybe some couples an't be broken, no matter how hard anyone tries.

Becca has been on the receiving end of her best friend Huxley getting a boyfriend and being pushed aside and feeling left out. And while she's moved on and has a new best friend, the feelings of hurt and betrayal remain. But it's not until Becca is hired to break up Huxley and Steve, that she really faces all of those pent up feelings and has the chance to have a good, close up look at their relationship.

I loved that while this book was basically about relationships, it wasn't solely about romance. This book contained love in lots of forms. It really highlighted that love comes in many colours. Love of family and love of friends were the two main ones that I took away with me.

The girls and Mrs Hardwick aww. Am I missing the girl gene that forces me to aww whenever I see something corny? Or was there a mass lobotomy I wasn't invited to?

The Break Up Artist had lots of humour throughout the story and I loved Philip Siegel's way of binding everything together. His writing was fun and witty, just as I had been told it would be. I really liked that there were so many layers to the story and there were little story lines developing all over the place. There was also a great sense of anticipation because of that.

If you love your YA with a good dose of humour and characters who you can relate to because of their flaws and the good dose of reality, then I'd say to grab yourself a copy of The Break Up Artist.

REVIEW: Losing Logan (Losing Logan #1) by Sherry D. Ficklin

What if the one thing you never meant to hold on to, is the one thing you can’t let go of?

Normally finding a hot guy in her bedroom wouldn’t irritate Zoe so badly, but finding her childhood friend Logan there is a big problem. Mostly because he’s dead. 

As the only person he can make contact with, he talks Zoe into helping him put together the pieces surrounding his mysterious death so he can move on. 

Thrust into his world of ultra popular rich kids, Zoe is out of her element and caught in the cross-hairs of Logan’s suspicious ex-girlfriend and the friends he left behind, each of whom had a reason to want him dead. The deeper they dig to find the truth, the closer Zoe gets to a killer who would do anything to protect his secrets. And that’s just the start of her problems because Zoe is falling for a dead guy.

My Thoughts:

The moonlight is hitting him at an odd angle, making him almost glow. It's so beautiful that for a moment I'm transfixed by it. He looks over his shoulder at me and all I can think is how beautiful he is. Like an angel.

Then he opens his mouth.

OMG!!! I don't even know where to start with explaining my love for this book. I have never read anything by Sherry D. Ficklin before, and while I'm so cranky at myself for that, I'm also ecstatic that I got to fall in love with her writing through Losing Logan. This book was brilliantly written, from the dedication, that had me laughing so hard, to the very last page that saw me getting all teary. 

There are few things better than being surprised when reading a book, and Losing Logan managed to surprise me time and again. There were so many times that I had guesses about how I thought things were going to play out and each and every time my ideas were blown straight out of the water. The mystery of it all was just perfect. I was so thrown when things were revealed, because I never once was anywhere close to guessing how things were going to go.

"You look like a girl," he stammers.

I promptly flip him off. 

"Ah, there's my little princess."

The backwards and forwards bantering Between Logan and Zoe was witty and fun, sarcastic and snarky and provided some real laugh out loud moments. Are all of Sherry D. Ficklin's books so witty? I really need to get them and find out.

Even dead he's the most beautiful boy I've ever seen. From the sharp slope of his nose to the curve of his jaw, From his broad shoulders to his dirty blonde hair that is perfect-messy in the way only movie stars seem to be able to achieve.

The romantic aspect of the book was just mind blowingly wonderful. The author weaved these relationships so perfectly. I was so torn at times. My heart knew what it wanted, but then it wanted something else. What it got was a whole lot of sweet and swoony romance. Just how I like it!!

The ending was so beautiful, so sad, so happy, so good. It was all of that and more. My emotions were going everywhere trying to decide, and get a grip on exactly how I was feeling. I admit to being one to cry pretty easily when it comes to books. Teary, glassy eyes are just a given for me. But tears rolling down my cheeks... Not so much. And I was actually really surprised by it, because going into Losing Logan, that wasn't what I expected at all. 

This book will without a shadow of a doubt be one that I can genuinely say that I will be picking up again. It is going onto my list of best books that I've read so far this year. Go, go ,go, grab it. You're gonna love it!!

“Thirsty?”

I jump at the sound of a soft female voice, my hand jerking so the hose splashes me right in the face. Muttering a curse, I drop the hose and reach out blindly, wrenching the faucet off with one hand as I swipe at my eyes with the back of the other. I hear the girl laugh and I whirl around, fully prepared to find some bratty preteen Hale daughter mocking me.

But she’s not a preteen. Not even close. More like around my age. She’s tall and slender, her long blonde hair falling far past bared tan shoulders. She’s wearing some sort of sundress or whatever you call it and she’s pretty much covered since it hits just above her knees, though her arms are exposed since the dress is sleeveless. The sun catches her just right though, shining through the thin fabric of her skirt so I can see through it.

My gaze drops and all I can see is long, long legs through the shadowy fabric. Damn. Those sexy legs are endless. She clears her throat, like she knows exactly where I’m looking and what I’m thinking and I jerk my gaze up guiltily to meet hers, feeling like a jackass.

That’s when I notice her eyes are blue. As blue as the sky above us, and she’s so damn pretty, with delicate features and pink, pink lips, that I can’t seem to form words.

“Who are you?” she asks curiously. Her voice washes over me, sweet and melodic and now it’s my turn to clear my throat to get the lump out so I can freaking speak.

“Who are you?” I ask back like an idiot.

She smiles shyly and my entire body reacts, a bolt of electricity seeming to go through me. “I asked first.”

“Are you Hale’s daughter?” If she is, that sucks because holy hell she’s hot but yeah.

She’s completely untouchable if she’s a Hale.

“What if I am?” She kicks at the ground with her sandaled foot, her cheeks coloring the faintest pink. Innocence radiates from her. She looks like a damn angel and seems a little uncomfortable with me.

Despite her seeming discomfort, I think she might be trying to flirt with me.

“Well, I’d make sure and be extra polite to you since I work for your dad.” I go with the truth because I don’t want any problems from this girl. I probably shouldn’t even be alone with her. She could say anything, accuse me of something terrible and I’d have no defense. Her word against mine.

And her word would win every single time.

Another laugh escapes her and she slowly shakes her head. “I like your honesty.”

I like everything about her so far but I keep my lips clamped shut. I’ve already said enough to make myself look like a total loser.“So I’m guessing you’re definitely Hale’s daughter?”

Anyone who has followed my reviews will know that I have a real love of forbidden romances, with my main pleasure being the student/teacher relationship. I devour these books when they fall into my hands. I could eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner and still want more. To Professor, With Love had me even more eager than normal, in that the teacher was the female this time around. More often then not it is the male who is in the position of authority, so I was jumping at the bit to get started on this.

Noel Gamble is the hot shot around town. Star quarterback for his college football team with a bevy of beauties more than willing to quench his every thirst and make all of his desires come true. And he laps it up. Dr. Kavanagh is his literature professor. To say that they butt heads would be an understatement. Outwardly their dislike for each other is there for everyone to see. But the attraction that they are both hiding will eventually start to surface. Will they risk their whole futures and cross the line to see where it will lead?

It broke my heart not to even be able to look at him because Noel Gamble was art, like God's apology for all the regular men in the world.

Noel Gamble, how much do I love you. He had so many of the traits that I can't help but be attracted to. He was protective, loving, caring, selfless... The list could go on. He is the bad boy with the sketchy background who just needs someone to show him the love that he deserves. He carries so many responsibilities around with him. He is Mr Popularity, but there isn't anyone who really knows him on a deeper level. Until he lets Aspen in.

"I just...I love looking at you. I love the sound of your voice. The way you walk. The way you smile and brush your hair out of your eyes. But I will never get over the way you love your family and how you'll do anything to save them. I just...I wish someday, someone would love me like that."

Aspen who initially comes across as so prim and proper, but turns out to be so much more outside of the four walls of the classroom. She is carrying around a whole pile of baggage of her own. She's come from a home where there wasn't a whole lot of parental love, so it made what she found with Noel all the more special.

The age gap between Noel and Aspen is only a few years, so I didn't have to wrestle with those normal feelings that I generally have about the right and wrong of the whole situation. Which is actually one of the things that I love about the whole student/teacher scenario. But everything else about this story was so amazing that it didn't bother me at all that that was missing.

I have to say that Noel and Aspen weren't exactly hiding their relationship very well. There were times that they were very public with their affections, so it was pretty much inevitable that things were going to come out into the open. And that's when we really see how Noel and Aspen really feel about each other.

I really have to mention the amazing quotes at the start of each chapter. They were so incredibly perfect. I think I highlighted every single one of them on my Kindle. Each related to the story like it had been written just for that purpose.

This book was a hands down, five star plus read for me. I absolutely loved every single minute of it. The pacing was fantastic and Linda Kage's writing is just, wow!! This is only the second book that I have read by her, with the other being a young Adult read, but she just shines when it comes to writing New Adult. To Professor With Love was a one sitting, unputdownable, captivating, steamy read.
