REVIEW: Fool Me Twice (If Only . . . #1) by Mandy Hubbard

Last summer, Mackenzie and Landon were the perfect couple. And then he dumped her and broke her heart. Fast-forward a year and they’re back at their summer jobs at Serenity Ranch and Spa with Mack and her best friend Bailey, spending their time fantasising about making voodoo dolls and playing childish pranks on Landon.

Luckily for Mack, the perfect opportunity presents itself. Landon takes a nasty fall and suddenly he’s stuck in the past – literally. His most recent memory is of last summer, when they were together, so now he’s calling Mack pet names and hanging all over her.

The plan is simple: keep Landon at arm’s length, manipulate him so he’s the one falling in love, and then, BAM, dump him in the most epic revenge plot in the history of everdom. There’s only one teensy problem: Mack can’t fall for Landon a second time.

My Thoughts:

What's that saying?
Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice...

Sometimes when life is throwing you all kinds of realities, you just need to get lost and bury yourself in a book that is a huge jump from those realities, makes you feel good and provides a whole lot of laughs. When I first read the synopsis for this book I knew that it was going to supply me with just what I needed.

Mackenzie and Landon had spent a perfect summer together. Spending time getting to know each other, and falling in love. But then on the first day back at school, Mack is confronted with the very real sight of Landon lip locking it with his ex. Mack is heartbroken and It's been torture seeing them together. Then summer rolls around again and Mack and Landon will be forced to work closely together at Serenity Ranch and Spa. Mackenzie certainly can't see serenity when she thinks about that scenario.

But then Landon takes a fall from his horse and is under the impression that him and Mack are still together. So with the help of her best friend, Bailey, Mack sets out to exact her revenge. But the more time that her and Landon spend together, the easier it is to forget about revenge and remember all the reasons she fell in love in the first place.

"You don't get it. Now you can totally screw him."
"Ohmygod, Bailey!" I say, grabbing her shoulders and shaking her lightly. "Im not going to have sex with him!."
"Not screw him." She laughs in a way that makes me feel dumb. and then pulls my hands off of her shoulders. "Screw with him."

Fool Me Twice was so much fun to read. It was light and fluffy and fun from start to finish. The pranks that Mack and Bailey play on Landon where hilarious as they escalated throughout the story. And Landon managed to get some revenge of his own. The race was on to see who could best the other with their high jinx. All set against the backdrop of a ranch, with beautiful sunsets and horse riding.

I loved Mack. I loved her sense of style and fun. I loved the discoveries and realisations that she made about herself. I loved her friendship with Bailey. I loved her ability to forgive. Now Landon was a different story. After the first few chapters I was convinced that there was no way that I was going to love Landon. No way in hell. Not after the way he dumped Mack. But guess what? Mandy Hubbard made me love him.  I just couldn't help it.

Fool Me Twice is not without it's issues. The lack of medical assistance given to Landon after his fall and memory loss was probably the main one. But hey, this was my escape from reality, so I can live with that. And even though I was pretty sure I knew how this story was going to end, it in no way detracted from my enjoyment of the story and the situations that the characters found themselves in.
Fool Me Twice was fun, quick and romantic, and a nice step away from my cold winter days. Thank you Bloomsbury Australia for the opportunity to read and review.

Outtake 2

394 Words

Sometimes when I have to cut scenes, its like chopping a piece of myself out, but when I go back and read how Ive incorporated the same information, but differently, Im always pleased. The decision to take out something is hard, but Ive learned to let my instincts lead the way.

Heres a scene between Father Tim Kerry and his friend, Mac, the sheriff. Father Kerrys trying to keep Hutch, the kid he believes is worth saving, from going to jail. The only way to do that is to convince Mac to put the boy back into the special Intervention Program. Father Kerrys in the sheriffs office. He and the sheriff, Mac, are good friends. Father Kerry speaks first.

“I want Hutch back.
Mac shook his head and took off his glasses. Youre are one pushy—”
“Remember youre talking to a priest, Mac.
“I cant—“
“Sure you can. You the boss, remember?
Mac leaned back in his chair, making the springs complain under him. What I got from the police report is theres nobody to take responsibility for him if I let him out.Mac set his glasses back on the end of his nose and peered over the top.
“Theres me.
“Damn it, Tim.Mac slammed his hands on his desk and pushed himself up. He paced to the window and back. On his third turn he stopped and stood looking down at the priest. Give me one good reason this kid gets another chance when the others didnt.
Father Kerry stood to look Mac in the eye. Because if someone hadnt given me that last chance Id be up at Attica.
Mac returned to the window as if there was an answer outside waiting for him. When he turned back to face the priest, he said, Once more. Thats it. If he doesnt stay clean this time, I wont do anything to help him. Are we clear?
“Yep.

In the final version, this scene never happened, but when Hutch is in the courtroom, I knew it had taken place, and I wrote the new scene with the old one in mind. All the reader knows is somehow Hutch is given this second chance, and thats all that Hutch knows, too. Im the only one who knows how it happened, at least until later. Thats one of the privileges of being the writer.

WAITING ON WEDNESDAY #76: Love and Other Unknown Variables by Shannon Lee Alexander

Waiting On Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking the Spine that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

Charlie Hanson has a clear vision of his future. A senior at Brighton School of Mathematics and Science, he knows he’ll graduate, go to MIT, and inevitably discover solutions to the universe’s greatest unanswered questions. He’s that smart. But Charlie’s future blurs the moment he reaches out to touch the tattoo on a beautiful girl’s neck.

The future has never seemed very kind to Charlotte Finch, so she’s counting on the present. She’s not impressed by the strange boy at the donut shop—until she learns he’s a student at Brighton where her sister has just taken a job as the English teacher. With her encouragement, Charlie orchestrates the most effective prank campaign in Brighton history. But, in doing so, he puts his own future in jeopardy.

By the time he learns she's ill—and that the pranks were a way to distract Ms. Finch from Charlotte’s illness—Charlotte’s gravitational pull is too great to overcome. Soon he must choose between the familiar formulas he’s always relied on or the girl he’s falling for (at far more than 32 feet per second squared).

Expected publication: October 7th 2014

I seem to be reading lots of paranormal and fantasy lately, yet I'm such a huge contemporary fan. This is one that I'm definitely going to be reading. The early buzz has me super excited!!
What book are you patiently waiting for the release of?

REVIEW: Flirty Dancing (The Ladybirds #1) by Jenny McLachlan

Bea Hogg is shy but fiery inside. When national dance competition Starwars comes to her school looking for talent, she wants to sign up. It's just a shame her best friend agreed to enter with school super-cow Pearl Harris. Bea will fight back! But when school hottie, Ollie Matthews, who also happens to be Pearl’s boyfriend, decides to enter the competition with Bea, she will have more than a fight on her hands.

This warm, nuanced, hilarious story about friendship, fortitude . . . and dancing is impossible not to fall in love with. Jenny’s voice is fresh and convincing, and she handles both darker and lighter elements of the story with equal panache.

My Thoughts:

"Though she be but little, she is fierce."

Sometimes a book will land in my mailbox for review that under normal circumstances I don't think I would have picked up to read since my TBR list is so incredibly long. And what a shame that would be, because I've discovered some real gems that I would not have had the pleasure of reading otherwise. Flirty Dancing is one of those such books. It is such a cute, fun read. But there are also some deeper undertones to the story, that make this so much more than what I expected at first glance.

Bea Hogg comes across as a shy, reserved girl. She is bullied and taunted by Pearl, the popular girl at school, so is lacking in a lot of friends or the confidence to stand up for herself. But underneath that shyness is a girl who knows what she wants. A girl who has dreams and opinions. When the opportunity arises to compete in a dance competition, Bea has visions of her and her best friend competing together. Unfortunately the best friend decides to join Pearls dance group instead. So Bea's Nan comes to the rescue. She signs Bea up to partner the school hottie Ollie Matthews. Bea is nervous, but so excited. There's only one problem. Ollie is Pearl's boyfriend, and Bea is pretty sure that Pearl will be anything but happy about this turn of events.

I couldn't help but continually visualize Dancing with the Stars while I was reading this. Only with teens. It was just so cool. Camera's, lights... I cannot dance. At all. So to get swept away in the buzz of practising and the glamour of performing in front of the cameras was such a thrill.

Together we leave the gloom of backstage and emerge into dazzling lights, swinging into a perfect close hold in the centre of the stage. Blackness and stars surround us. The audience is silent, waiting. Our eyes lock, something we've rehearsed, and Ollie says, quietly, but perfectly clearly, "Be fierce, Bea."

I loved Bea and Ollie together. They seemed to click and fit so well almost immediately. Ollie was just so sweet and confident, and he looked out for Bea without ever making a big deal about it. That's just the type of person that he is. I love books where the characters develop a friendship and a real and true liking for each other before the big romance, and that's exactly what I got here.

I also love when support characters have personality and zest. When they really, truly add something to the story. And I think I would have to say that that was the case with almost everyone of the support characters in this book. One of the standouts for me in Flirty Dancing was Bea's Nan. She was hilarious, comforting, protective, and loving. She was there to support and boost Bea's confidence. She had me laughing big huge belly laughs on so many occasions. As did Bea's little sister. I think she almost stole every scene she was in.

Who cares what happens at school tomorrow? Right now, I have a staring role in my life... and I love it!

Bea goes through a wonderful growth during the story, as she discovers herself and learns that she is worthy of standing up for herself and being treated with respect. One of the main reasons for this is the wonderful people that she has around her. Such a beautiful and supportive family and a wonderful friendship with Ollie.

Even though Flirty Dancing dealt with some deeper subjects, it was just written so lightly and with so much fun that I'm pretty sure the huge smile I was wearing very rarely left my face for the whole book. If you're after something fun and cute and flirty, then I suggest you pick yourself up a copy of Flirty Dancing. Today!!

4/5 Fun and Flirty Stars.

A huge thank you to Bloomsbury Australia for providing me with this copy for review.

Genre: Contemporary Romance
Age category: New Adult
Release Date: October 1, 2014

Blurb:
What happened in high school stayed in high school. Until now.
Five years ago, Michael Graham betrayed the only person who ever really knew him. Since then, he’s made an art of hiding his sexual preference from everyone. Including himself.

So it’s a shock when his past strolls right into the Harkness College locker room, sporting a bag of hockey gear and the same slow smile that had always rendered Graham defenseless. For Graham, there is only one possible reaction: total, debilitating panic. With one loose word, the team’s new left wing could destroy Graham’s life as he knows it.

John Rikker is stuck being the new guy. Again. And it’s worse than usual, because the media has latched onto the story of the only “out” player in Division One hockey. As the satellite trucks line the sidewalk outside the rink, his new teammates are not amused.

And one player in particular looks sick every time he enters the room.

Rikker didn’t exactly expect a warm welcome from Graham. But the guy won’t even meet his eyes. From the looks of it, his former… best friend / boyfriend / whatever isn’t doing so well. He drinks too much and can’t focus during practice.

Either the two loneliest guys on the team will self destruct from all the new pressures in their lives, or they can navigate the pain to find a way back to one another. To say that it won’t be easy is the Understatement of the Year.

Warning: unlike the other books in this series, this heartbreaking love story is about two guys. Contains sexual situations, dance music, snarky t-shirts and a poker-playing grandmother.

Graham Teaser

Excerpt:
Bella grabbed the front pocket of my Vermont sweatshirt and actually pulled me through the din of the most crowded room, toward a table where Graham sat in a booth, across from Hartley.
Ugh. I had no idea this would be so cozy. In fact, there was nowhere for me to sit. For a second there I felt like it was seventh grade all over again, and I didn’t know where to sit in class.
That’s how I met Graham — seventh grade Spanish. We were the two runts in the back row with terrible gringo accents and no friends. The teacher always made the class pair up to practice dialogue. Graham and I were partners.
Hola, Miguel.
Hola, Juan.
Te gusta el futbol?
Sí, me gusta el futbol.
The early days of middle school had been awkward. But this? So much more awkward than that.
“I’ll sit on Graham’s lap,” Bella suggested, grabbing a slice of pizza off the tray.
“Naw, let me find a chair,” I said, turning quickly into the crowd. And lo, by the grace of God, I found one in front of an ancient pay phone. Setting the chair at the end of their booth gave me some much-needed distance. Bella sat on the end, boxing Graham into the corner. Bella’s hand found its way onto my knee about two seconds after I sat down.
Someone filled my glass. “Have a slice?” Hartley offered.
“Thanks, I already ate,” I said quickly. But I sucked back some of the beer. It was pretty wimpy stuff, but I’ll bet the price was right.
“Tell us about your transfer,” Bella prompted while the others dug in. “You said you’d tell it over beers.”
Right. Too soon. “Well,” I hedged. The thing was, I’d told people I was gay many, many times. I was actually pretty good at it. But you don’t say it when you’re all trapped at a table. You have to drop the bomb when your victims are free to walk away from you. Because even the people who are going to turn right back around and be there for you often need a minute to digest the idea.
And the fact that Graham was sitting three feet away, staring at his slice of pizza as if it might reveal the secrets of the universe, made this a particularly bad time. I didn’t want to look vulnerable in front of him. I’d tried that before in my life, and it ended badly. Very badly.
“Thing is, I haven’t had enough beer yet to tell it.”
“There you go with the buildup again,” Bella said, nibbling on a slice.
“Yeah? Well my stories don’t usually disappoint.” That was a bit of pointless bravado. But it was probably true.
I happened to glance toward Graham then. And even in the low light of the pizza place, I saw him freeze. And I realized just how far a little smack talk about stories I might tell would freak him out. I hadn’t meant it like that. But the effect on him was instant and powerful. His jaw went hard and his fist clenched on the table.
Easy, boy. “Tell me about the practice schedule,” I said to change the topic.

“Dream Boy skillfully and creatively tackles the common theme of good and bad dreams coming alive.... The writing is tight and well-paced, and nicely balances action with Annabelle’s character development as she tries to unravel the mysteries of... her dreams. Her teenage voice is spot on: unsure of herself, but spirited, with a sarcasm that masquerades as confidence. The plot twists and moves in unexpected yet fascinating directions." -- The Roanoke Times

Excerpt:
I’ve always been a dreamer. Daydreams. Night dreams. Dreams of grandeur and dreams of escape. If I were an onion and you peeled back the papery outside, you’d find layer after layer of eye-watering dreams. And in the center, where there’s that little curlicue of onion heart? There’d be a puff of smoke from the dreams that burned away.

It was all just brain waves, I thought—disconnected, like the notebook that my friend Talon keeps. She draws a line down the middle of the page; on the right she writes everything she remembers about a dream, and on the left she puts notes about the stuff that’s happening in real life, things that might trigger her subconscious. Reality on one side, dreams on the other—a clear line between the two.

But it turns out there are no clear lines, just a jumble of what is and what might be. And all of it is real.
