In seventeen-year-old Jax Mitchell's world, humans are nearly extinct and alien settlers have arrived.
Until recently, the E’rikon have remained segregated in their city and ignored the few humans who have tried to engage them… but now they have taken Jax’s brother. To rescue him, she forms an uneasy alliance with a teenage E’rikon left stranded in the woods. She agrees to guide him to the city if he sneaks her past the human-proof barrier. Too bad it’s not that simple.
Jax, who cannot stand to be touched, finds that she’s drawn to the alien boy with bright green hair and jewel-like scales down his back. And he’s equally affected by her, the courageous redhead with haunted eyes. But she doesn’t know the alien’s true motives and he has no idea that she is much more than she seems.
In this world where alien and human are at odds, the connection forming between the two has consequences. What started off as a rescue mission sets a chain of events in motion which threatens not only the remaining humans and the growing alien society, but Earth itself.

It's an odd feeling to be stuck inside a dream, mind frozen in fear, while your body acts out your greatest horror.
I had only ever read one Alien book besides this one, and if I thought that Broken Skies was going to travel down the same similar storyline I was very mistaken. One of the main differences was that Theresa Kay sets her story in a dystopian world. Society has collapsed and humans are almost extinct. Aliens are living in their world, although they don't mix with the humans. But that's all about to change when Jax and her twin brother Jace come face to face with a group of E'rikon, and Jace is kidnapped by the aliens. Left behind when the E'rikon leave, Lir teams up with Jax to help her get into his city and rescue her brother.
I liked this story right from the start. It was engaging and intriguing, full of secrets and revelations with a nice dose of action and a dash of romance to balance everything out nicely.
Always for me. Always about me. All my fault. Everything.
Jax was a likeable character. Despite her dislike of being touched she was quite strong and that strength just continued to grow as the story went on. She learns a whole variety of things about herself as she makes the trek in search of her brother. And even though these revelations along with the situations she finds herself in are enough to bring her to her knees, she always manages to overcome her fears and the obstacles and get back to her feet and move on.
He's been my life raft, my rock, and I'm just selfish, too broken to have anything to offer him, but I need him. Some part of me calls out to him, craves the comfort he offers, and I'm not strong enough to deny it.
I was really intrigued by Lir, and even at the end of Broken Skies I felt that there was a lot more to learn about him. I liked that physically he was very different to a human boy with his green hair and scales, and it was because of those differences that I was really drawn to him.
The relationship between Jax and Lir was anything but smooth. They were faced with many challenges along the way as well as each learning to trust the other. Just when I thought that they had reached an understanding, something would surface that would once again put their growing feelings to the test.
The story flowed really well and the action and intrigue kept me interested throughout. This is definitely a series that I will continue to read. I have a long list of questions that I can't wait to have answers to. I also look forward to seeing how things are going to develop between Jax and Lir after that ending!!

Author Bio: The only person she knows who had a subscription to Writer's Digest at eleven and was always excited to write research papers, Theresa has been putting words to paper since a young age. Living in the mountains of central Virginia with her husband and two kids, she works as a paralegal by day, binges on Netflix at night and finds bits of time in between reading almost everything she can get her hands on and laundry to craft stories that tend to feature broken characters in sci-fi or paranormal worlds, with a touch of romance thrown in for good measure. She's constantly lost in one fictional universe or another and is a self-proclaimed “fangirl” who loves being sucked in to new books or TV shows. Theresa originally wanted to write horror novels as an ode to her childhood passion for Stephen King, but between her internal Muse’s ramblings and the constant praise for her sci-fi pieces from her writer’s group – The Rebel Writers – she knew she should stick with what was working.
